Summit Estate Recovery Center has developed a partnership with Dr. Saad Shakir, MD to provide this new cutting-edge treatment for depression. For those who have tried antidepressant medication and found the experience to be less than successful, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulus (TMS) may be just the right treatment to help achieve a more positive result.

At Summit Estate Recovery Center, we recognize that depression is often a cause of, or comes as a result of, one's long-term alcohol or substance abuse. Often we see clients who turn to drugs or alcohol to help alleviate the symptoms of depression, or clients who are so overwhelmed by their substance abuse that they become clinically depressed. It is important for us as a treatment center to provide solutions not only for substance abuse, but also for the potential underlying depression.

To address these issues, Summit Estate clients have direct access to Dr. Shakir's clinic for the assessment of depression and the potential to undergo TMS Therapy. In order to facilitate treatment, clients of Summit Estate Recovery Center may be transported to and from appointments at Dr. Shakir's nearby clinic. Dr. Shakir's clinical team is also fully integrated into the clinical program at Summit Estate when necessary to coordinate treatment and aftercare.

What is TMS Therapy?

TMS Therapy uses a highly focused pulsed magnetic field to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. TMS Therapy is performed by prescription only in a psychiatrist's office under their supervision while you remain awake and alert. Neurostar TMS Therapy is the first and only non-systemic and non-invasive TMS device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of patients with major depression who have not benefited from prior antidepressant treatment.

TMS Therapy is:

  • Non-invasive, meaning that it does not involve surgery. It does not require any anesthesia or sedation, as the patient remains awake and alert during the treatment.
  • Non-systemic, meaning that it is not taken by mouth and does not circulate in the bloodstream throughout the body.
